The chiefs and elders of Zezera in the Jaman South Municipality of the Bono Region have issued an apology for the unruly behaviour of some youth in the community who destroyed desks donated to schools in the Zezera zone.

According to the chiefs, they were compelled to unequivocally condemn the behaviour of the youth because such actions are unacceptable in every civil society and should not be encouraged.

Rendering the apology on behalf of the people of Zezera, Aduokor No. 1 and Kofitiakrom for the destruction of the desks, Nana Yaboah Asuamah, the Akwamuhene of Zezera, expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing its negative implications and apologised to the government.

"We are deeply saddened by the actions of these youth and apologise for the destruction of the desks because, as much as we understand their frustrations, such acts will not solve the problems facing the community,"  he said.

He added that while the youth's frustration over the government's reluctance to extend telecommunication to the area is understandable, resorting to destruction is not the right approach.

“The youth are angered by the fact that Zezera and some surrounding communities have been neglected in terms of development, most especially the absence of mobile connectivity in the area but that is not a justification,"  Nana Yaboah Asiamah added.

On his part, the Odikro of Zezera, Nana Ebenezer Yeboah, used the opportunity to reiterate their demand for mobile connectivity to Zezera, Aduokor No. 1, Kwamepim, Kofitiakrom, Boama and other communities, which is the number one priority of the people.

“We have apologised but we are stressing our demand for mobile connectivity for Zezera and other surrounding communities because that is what the people  he appealed.

Last week, some youth of Kofitiakrom angrily destroyed students’ desks that had been dispatched by the Municipal Education Directorate for distribution to schools in the Zezera Zone.

The destroyed desks were part of 600 desks that were donated to the Education Directorate by the Jaman South Parliamentary Candidate of the NPP, Colonel Kwadwo Damoah for onward distribution to basic schools to augment the furniture deficit in the municipality.

Meanwhile, 19 suspects who were arrested by the police in connection with the incident have since been granted bail.
