Accra, July 05, GNA - Hearing commences at an Accra High Court on Thursday, July 7, 2005 of a writ seeking the arrest and prosecution of Chris Asher for the alleged murder of one Ofori Atta in 1982 at Akim Oda.
The writ was filed last month by the Greater Accra Branch of Legal Aid Committee of Ghana on behalf of Matilda Ofori Atta, daughter of the deceased.
It is pleading with the court for an order of Mandamus to compel the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Prisons and the Attorney General to take measures to bring Chris Asher to justice. In a notice of amendment to the writ, Matilda expressed dismay at the inaction of the police in spite of frantic efforts to get Chris Asher arrested for escaping from lawful custody. She said on several occasions, the police told her they would not arrest Chris Asher.
Matilda said Chris Asher has never denied escaping from custody and in a book he launched last year ''he narrates with impunity how he escaped from lawful custody from Nsawam Prison.''
''After all, this is a case in which a murder charge had been preferred against Chris Asher who escaped from lawful custody, fled to Britain where he is staying but frequently comes down to Ghana to grant interviews to the media and hold press conferences, yet nothing happens'' Matilda said.
