Church opens functional literacy class in Ho

Edem Chapel of the Apostles Revelation Society (ARS) in Ho on Wednesday inaugurated a functional literacy class for members of the Church.

The ‘batch four’ English literacy class, which equips learners with reading and writing skills, is the 10th running in the Ho Municipality under the auspices of the Non-Formal Education Division..

Mr. Seth Anku, Volta Regional Coordinator of Non-Formal Education who inaugurated the class, lauded the Church for the foresight, saying such classes were helping to reduce poverty in communities.

“Several people have had their lives improved socially and economically after our classes and I think the Church has taken a good initiative,” he said.

Reverend Edith Nyamadi, Resident Pastor of the Church, said the initiative was to train more people to be able to read English Bible in the Church and win souls.

Madam Rose Kuebune, a learner, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she decided to enroll so she could teach her grandchildren at home and communicate with people in public.

Mr Isaac Adifu, one of the teachers trained by Non-Formal to handle the class, said besides the reading and writing skills, learners would be taught do simple arithmetic and record keeping.

Mr Wilson Agbanyo, Regional Director of Training, Non-Formal Education said the learners should be able to read and write in four weeks.
