Civil Service boss urges govt to motivate workers

Cape Coast, May 6, GNA - Dr. Alex Glover Quartey, Head of Civil Service, on Wednesday repeated calls on the government to, as a matter of urgency, enhance workers motivation by reviewing salaries and working conditions.

This is because, these to a large extent, determine the level of productivity of workers. Dr. Quartey, made the call at an annual best workers award ceremony for workers at the Central Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) at Cape Coast.

He urged management to treat the workers with respect and refrain from acts that would demoralise them and create apathy. Dr. Quartey asked other RCCs in the country to emulate the Central Region, and commended the Regional Minister for the institution of the award, and urged them to keep it up.

Mr. Isaac Edumadze, Regional Minister on his part, observed that it is only when workers are dedicated to their work and give of their best that their agitations for higher salary and better conditions of service could be justified.

According to him, material gains should not be the only motivating factor for workers to increase productivity, but that their contributions to the development of the region, must in itself motivate them to give of their best.

The Regional Minister congratulated the workers for their hard work and the award winners for their dedication to duty that won them the prizes.

He assured them that the annual award would be sustained to serve as a moral booster and asked those who did not win any awards to work harder.

Mr. Michael Essandoh, Regional Co-ordinating Director, said the awards were instituted to reward hard working staff and gave the assurance that selection was fair, impartial and transparent. He urged all districts of the region to also reward their hard working staff to promote the socio-economic development of the region. Mr. Kofi Seidu, a night watchman who won the best worker award, took home a bicycle for his prize, while three other members of staff were also rewarded for their hard work.
