The ongoing voter registration exercise took a violent turn in the Adu Gyama area of the Ahafo Ano South East constituency in the Ashanti region on May 11, 2024.

The chaotic incident left two individuals injured.

According to a myjoyonline.com report, armed men stormed the registration centre wielding clubs, machetes and other weapons, escalating tensions and leading to clashes between opposing factions.

According to the report, the cause of the fracas was how two students, allegedly brought to the centre for registration by a representative of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), were prevented by political party agents and local residents who contested their eligibility.

Despite an initial protest and attempts to calm the situation, the arrival of armed men intensified the confrontation.

The armed group, intent on ensuring the students are registered reportedly forced the EC official to grant their wish, in the process clashing with opponents.

Two individuals sustained injuries, reportedly wounds to their neck and arms. Emergency services rushed the injured parties to St. Mankraso Hospital in the constituency, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The incident is reported to have forced an abrupt end to the voter registration exercise at the centre.
