The Public Relations Officer of the Police Hospital, Chief Inspector Faustina Nunekpeku, has disclosed that close to ten abandoned babies are brought to the hospital each year.

In an interview with GhanaWeb's video journalist, Kwame Adzaho-Amenortor, she attributed these cases to teenage pregnancy, poverty and incest. He advised parents to pay attention to their daughters to help prevent teenage pregnancy.

"In a year, we receive at least 8 to 10 cases, not just babies but also children as young as six months or one-year-old that have been abandoned," she noted.

In a recent case, a newborn baby girl was found at Shiashie on Saturday, September 28, 2024, and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

The baby, covered in a cloth, was found under the overpass and was taken to the East Legon Police Station.

A social worker who spoke on condition of anonymity said after assessments by medical officers, the baby will be taken to a Children's home for further monitoring and care.

"As the child was brought on Saturday, we were called and we followed up. The baby is responding to treatment. If the baby is monitored and fit to be discharged, we will write a report, add the police extract and medical form, inform the regional directorate and a directive will be given. Mostly the baby will be taken to a home," he noted.
