Accra, May 14, GNA - The National Coalition on Domestic Violence (NCDV) on Friday called on government to fulfil its obligation to the people by expediting action on the Domestic Violence Bill and to lay it before Parliament. The group also urged Ghanaians to show their love for peace in the families by supporting the Bill.
A statement issued in Accra on Friday by Nana Asantewa Afadzinu, Coordinator of the Coalition to draw attention to International Family Day which falls on May 15, said the bill would provide a comprehensive legal framework that will address the canker of domestic violence, offer adequate protection for victims and help improve peace and harmony in families.
The bill would promote counselling, reconciliation and privacy and take into consideration the sensitive nature of domestic relationships. The statement said the family was the core of every society as such the government has acknowledged that by signing, ratifying and acceding to International Human Rights instruments for the promotion and protection of the fundamental human rights of its citizens in the public sphere, as well as within families.
It reminded Ghanaians about the call by the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, in his report to mark this year's day of the family on the World to recommit itself to ensure an environment that sustained and supported families for the benefit of future generations.
