Hickory Hills, Illinois – In a vibrant celebration of GaDangme culture and heritage, the GaDangme Community Organization, GACO, held a splendid coronation ceremony at Chateau Del Mar on July 6, 2024. The event marked the installation of their new Mantse, Nii Yebouh Nortey Odiasempa I, along with other key royal court members.

The event occurred 22 years after the first Mantse, Nii Lante Okunka Blebodzan I, was inaugurated. The outgoing Mantse, Nii Armah Ankonfrah I, was not inaugurated. He, however, served with distinction for a remarkable 17 years.

The GaDangme people, like many other Ghanaian tribes, have preserved their ancient and revered chieftaincy tradition. The term “Mantse” translates to “father of the town” or “head of the town.” Over centuries, a distinct hierarchy of chieftaincy has evolved, encompassing chiefs, queens, sub-chiefs, and other court members. Even in the diaspora, Ghanaian communities continue to mimic and celebrate these rich cultural practices, passing them down to future generations.

Nii Armah Ankonfra I, the outgoing Mantse, graciously guided and groomed the new chief, Nii Yebouh Nortey Odiasempa I. In a sentimental moment, the incoming Mantse swore an oath of office before the outgoing Mantse. Following tradition, he sat on the outgoing chief’s lap three times, symbolizing readiness for the task ahead, peaceful transfer of authority, obedience, acceptance, and guidance from his predecessor.

The Queen and other Royal Court members were also sworn in. They all pledged their allegiance to the new Mantse.

The celebration’s theme, “Unveiling our Tradition, Promoting Health, And Fostering Unity In Our Community,” resonated with attendees.

The coronation ceremony unfolded amid traditional drumming and lively music from DJ Sam Pee. The GaDangme Community Organization members and other revelers danced and celebrated joyfully. The high table showcased the Mantse, Queenmother, and other Royal Court members, while the linguist held his staff of office sitting in front of the court.

The dominating attire was made of rich Kente fabrics. Specially designed black and white cloth adorned with the organization’s logo, and other elegant dresses added to the visual splendor of the celebrations.



King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the current King of the GaDangme Traditional Area , sent gracious congratulatory message to the organization. He praised their vision and tireless efforts to promote and preserve GaDangme culture in Chicago. “Today,” he emphasized, “as we celebrate this significant milestone, let us reaffirm our commitment to unity, cultural heritage, and community development.”

Mr. Sonny Miils, the organization’s President , thanked the dignitaries, attendees, Ghana National Council, and GaDangme International for their unwavering support and encouragement.

Mr. William Amartey, the chairman of the function, eloquently described the GaDangme story as a journey through time. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the leadership and members for the vision to assist their brothers and sisters displaced by the Volta River Dam spillage. His closing words resonated with the spirit of the celebration: “Today’s festivities are a reaffirmation of our heritage, health, and togetherness.”

Joe Atiso, formerly of Ramblers International fame, took to the floor and showcased his remarkable talent, adding to the cultural richness of the event. The Ekome Feemor Cultural Troupe showcased GaDangme traditional dances. It was a mesmerizing experience for the audience. Traditional dances are not only a celebration of culture but also a way to connect with our roots and express joy.

The rhythmic movements, vibrant costumes, and spirited performances created a sense of unity and pride. Seeing a stunning and centuries-old cultural heritage come alive through the group’s performance was heartwarming and nostalgic!

The emcees for the occasion, Mrs. Elizabeth Mills and Ms. Abigail (Maame Asantewaa), handled their roles masterfully. Nummo Ayittey Laryea Wulomo, the spiritual leader, poured libation, seeking blessings and peace from their ancestral gods—the ceremony seamlessly blended tradition, talent, and community spirit.

Deserving members of the group received awards for their contributions , dedication and service.

The GaDangme Community Organization’s coronation was a ceremonial event and a testament to the enduring spirit of tradition and community. As they continue to honor their heritage, they pave the way for future generations to embrace their cultural legacy.
