Kaniago (B/A) Oct. 28, GNA - Seven farming communities in Forikrom Electoral Area in Techiman Municipality, have appealed to the Municipal Assembly to re-locate a disposal site for solid waste at Ayimana to forestall the outbreak of an epidemic. Nana Ayiso Koffour, linquist of Oseeadeyo Akumfi-Ameyaw IV,Omanhene of Techiman Traditional Area and Mr. James Kwabena Osei, Assembly Member for Forikrom made the appeal on behalf of the affected communities. The communities are Kaniago, Anomatoa, Benkai, Forikrom, Asantanso, Kromoa and Fiaso, where water bodies that provide the people with drinking water have been polluted by the waste deposited at Ayimana. Nana Koffour and Mr. Osei told Ghana News Agency (GNA) the solid waste dumped at Ayimana had drifted into rivers Fia, Atunkru and Buokruwa, which provide drinking water for the communities. They said the immediate re-location of the disposal site would help avert a catastrophe.
Mr. Abdul Karim, Techiman Municipal Environmental Officer when contacted, said the problem had been identified and the Assembly was making efforts to get a new site for waste disposal. "Waste management has been a major problem confronting the Assembly in recent times due to the central market and the Assembly spends a fortune on the evacuation of waste in the municipality", he said. Mr. Karim said the Assembly, through the community water and sanitation programme would provide boreholes at the affected communities.
