An activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Brogya Genfi, has taken a swipe at the Akufo-Addo government for awarding a multi-million contract to an Indian company for the supply of condoms for the Ministry of Health.

A post on Brogya Genfi’s Facebook timeline suggests President Akufo-Addo has okayed some GHC4,000,000 for the purchase of 26,849,952 pieces of condoms into the country.

Reports are rife that the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), has approved a whopping GH¢3,993,930.36 for the import of male condoms into the country.

The contract has been awarded to an Indian-owned company called, Pharmanova Ghana Limited.

The said contract is currently generating a lot of conversations among concerned Ghanaians with many condemning the NPP government for sidelining Ghanaian companies.

The former Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser recalled how former President John Mahama was subjected to heavy criticism when he introduced a scheme to distribute sanitary pads to adolescent girls in less privileged Senior High Schools in the country during his tenure.

The then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), waged a campaign against the policy, describing it as demonic and part of rituals to help the governing NDC retain power in the 2016 elections.

In view of this, Brogya Genfi expressed shock at the government over the condom contract since they opposed the sanitary programme for the less-privileged girls.

His statement on Facebook reads:

“When a scholarship scheme captured sanitary pad for young girls under President John Mahama, the then Akufo-Addo led opposition brought down hell to our land.

Today, President Akufo-Addo has awarded GHC4,000,000 (approximately) contract to a foreign company to import 26,849,952 pieces of CONDOMS for the Ministry of Health.

The Male adult population (18yrs – 85yrs) of Ghana is about 8million people (GSS, 2018 est.). Which practically means by December 2019, every male adult of Ghana including myself and His Excellency President Akufo-Addo should get at least 3 pieces of Condoms free from the State (One Male Adult, Three Condoms)… #CondomGovernmentEqualsImpotentGovernment.”
