Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has cautioned members of parliament to conduct themselves with decorum during parliamentary proceedings.

Concerned about the disrespectful treatment many members of parliament receive from security personnel, Speaker Alban Bagbin advised the lawmakers to exhibit good conduct that reflects their position and authority as members of parliament.

Alban Bagbin made this known during a parliamentary sitting on June 9.

“Honorable members, a number of you have complained to me that you meet some of these security personnel and even some other officials, and when you say, ‘Oh, I’m a member of parliament,’ the response you get is, ‘And so what?’ I want to implore all of you, pleading with all of you to let’s conduct ourselves as leaders of state.

“Sometimes when you’re doing this on the floor, they look at it and they assess you. So when you go and you say, ‘I’m a member of parliament,’ and they know that on the floor of the house there is no difference between you and the kindergarten people…”, he stated.

The 8th parliament under the 4th republic has been marred by several controversies and drama, subjecting the house to public scrutiny.

From snatching ballot boxes and trading blows over the approval of the contentious e-levy to the brouhaha over the approval of ministerial nominees, among many other incidents, the infamous 8th Parliament has become unpopular amongst the public.
