The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has rejected assertions that a review of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which is in motion, would affect the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Citing the review of the constitution in 1996, the minister said that the work of the Constitution Review Consultative Committee, which his ministry has set up, would in no way affect the pending general elections.

He pointed out that all the reviews that were done to the constitution were done in 1996, which was also an election year.

“I have heard people opine that in an election year, there is not much that can be done when it comes to constitutional amendment. With the greatest respect, I beg to differ.

“All the amendments to the 1992 Republican Constitution happened in 1996,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Suame, is quoted to have said in a citinewsroom.com report.

He added, “After the election in November and December, all the amendments happened in 1996, after the presidential and general elections. So, I believe that we will not be stopped by time to do the consultation we intend to continue.”
