Construction workers to get HIV/AIDS education at work sites

Apam (C/R), May 20, GNA - Mr Eric Akobeng, Gomoa District HIV/AIDS Monitoring and Education Focal Person, has exhorted managements of construction firms and other companies who move their workers to sites to arrange for HIV/AIDS education for their workers from time to time. Mr Akobeng said since the workers did not go to the sites with their wives, such education could suppress their sexual desire.

He made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Apam at an orientation workshop for CBOs funded by the Ghana AIDS Commission to fight against HIV/AIDS in the Gomoa District Mr Akobeng said the lifestyles of some of the workers at their sites posed a threat to the fight against HIV/AIDS, suggesting that urgent measures needed to be taken to arrest the situation. He said all development projects were human centred, which made it necessary for individual lives to be protected at all times. Mr Akobeng advised Ghanaians not to regard women who paraded in the hotels and the streets in the cities alone as commercial sex workers, but should also consider those in the rural areas who changed men "as they change their clothing."

Seven CBOs have received a total of 125 million cedis for anti HIV/AIDS campaign in the district.
