Consultative workshop to develop a policy for street children opens

Accra, June 8, GNA - A two-day stakeholders consultative workshop to develop a policy framework on street children for Government, Non-Governmental Organisations and other service providers, to enable them to target interventions more accurately on Tuesday opened in Accra.

Mr Herbert Mensah of the African Center for Women and Development, who moderated the function, urged participants to make inputs that would help to develop a comprehensive policy that would be most effective for tackling the problem of "streetism".

About 30 participants attended the workshop, jointly organised by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the African Center for Women and Development. They were from the Ghana Education Service, Ghana Dressmakers and Beauticians Association, Association of Batik, Tie and Dye, Ghana National Association of Garages and the media.

Mr Mensah said though there had been some interventions on street children by different actors they lacked consistency in implementation and the need to formulate a comprehensive policy that would ensure effective implementation of the different interventions in a co-coordinated, effective and efficient manner was paramount.
