An autopsy conducted on the body of the late Vida Frema, 33, who was found dead in her policeman boyfriend’s room at Konongo last week, has revealed that she died by hanging.
However, the bereaved family has rejected the report outright.
“An autopsy report has indicated cause of death as hanging,” the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Fred Adu Anim, stated in a news release issued on Friday, February 2, 2018.
The police capo also said that Sergeant Bright Opoku Yeboah, in whose room Frema – a teacher at Kumasi Girl’s Senior High School – was found dead, had been granted bail “to report for further action.”
DCOP Adu Anim also said investigations suggested that Sgt Yeboah, a cop stationed at the Konongo Divisional Headquarters, is the boyfriend of Frema.
“On January 29, 2018, Sgt Yeboah left his girlfriend, Frema, now deceased, in his room for work. He returned on the same day to find her hanging in the bedroom dead,” he stated in the release.
He said also that some stomach entrails of Frema had been sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for analytical tes, as there was an indication that she consumed a poisonous chemical before she hanged herself.
Family Rejects Report
Meanwhile, an elder brother of Frema, Enoch Bonsu, 37, has described the autopsy report as a fallacy, alleging that the bereaved family was cock sure that Sgt Opoku Yeboah had a hand in the death of his sister.
He said the autopsy report was not complete, stating “They told the family that they were taking some parts of her body to the Ghana Standards Authority for some additional tests to determine what really killed my sister.
“The family was informed then that the report about the tests that are supposed to be conducted in Accra would be in by this coming Friday and so we are surprised that the police have concluded that she died by hanging.”
According to Enoch, the rapid manner in which the police issued a press release to state that Frema died through hanging had clearly confirmed the suspicion of the bereaved family that Sgt. Yeboah killed his sister.
He said, “My sister suffered bruises on her body and also suffered a broken arm, which all suggest that she was severely beaten by Sgt Yeboah, who later hanged her on a police lanyard to divert attention from his weird action.”
He fumed, “They think we are fools. They said she died by hanging but we did not see any sign on her body which suggests so. People who die by hanging, you will either see a protruding tongue or toilet on their bodies.
“We did not see any of those signs on the body of my sister. Besides, we also saw that she had been beaten and they want us to believe that she hanged herself, which is totally absurd.”
Enoch Bonsu also alleged that Sgt Yeboah owed his sister GH¢250,000 “and he was not paying the amount so my sister also tore his passport into pieces and he decided to beat her to death and that is the gospel truth.”
According to him, the bereaved family would hold a crunch meeting to discuss the report, adding, “We are not ruling out engaging a private pathologist to conduct fresh autopsy on the body.”
