Christopher Obeng, a corn miller at Agbogbla, near Sogakope in the Volta Region, who allegedly defiled and impregnated his 15-year-old physically-challenged niece, has been remanded in prison custody by the Sogakope Circuit Court last Thursday.

The suspect who is also a farmer, is said to have taken advantage of the absence of other members of the family from home, and lured the primary six pupil into his room, gagged her and forcibly had sex with her on February 7, this year, at about 2:30 pm.

The plea of Obeng, 26, who is charged with defilement of a female under 16 years of age, was not taken and he is to be brought before court on June 4.

Chief Inspector E. K. Atsyor, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Ayesu Essampong, that when the suspect returned home from farm at about 2.30 pm, other members of the family had all gone out, leaving only the victim, crippled in both legs, at home.

The prosecution said after carrying out the act, Obeng warned the victim not to disclose it to anybody, otherwise she would die. However, Chief insp. Atsyor said the victim’s grandmother, later noticing “some changes” in her, and took her to the Sogakope District Hospital where she was examined and found to be four months pregnant.

When questioned, she disclosed it to her, and Obeng was arrested by the Dabala Police, following a complaint.
