Council to sanction chief for engaging in politics

Agona Kwanyako (C/R), May 26, GNA - The Kyidomhene Council of Agona Kwanyako would, on Sunday June 1, take a decision on Nana Atta Ofori IV, Abakomahene of Agona Kwanyako, who has declared his intention to contest the December election as an independent presidential candidate. The council would determine the type of punishment to be given to Nana Atta Ofori since the constitution does not allow chiefs to engage in active politics.

Nana Okuta 11, Nifahene of Agona Kwanyako, told the GNA in an interview that the council's President, Nana Ampim Darko V, and his members were shocked at Nana Atta Ofori's decision. He said about two weeks ago Nana Atta Ofori presented two bottles of schnapps to the council informing them of his intention. Nana Okuta said members of the council questioned him whether the constitution allowed a chief to take part in active politics but he ignored them.

He said Nana Atta Ofori told the chiefs that "since he is going to contest as an independent candidate and not on the ticket of any political party the law permits him to do so as a citizen of the country".

Nana Okuta said chieftaincy is a noble institution and chiefs of Kyidomhene Council would not allow anybody to drag it into sludge.
