Court advises unit committees to be accountable to their communities

Mankranso (Ash), Oct 22, GNA - Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie sitting at the Mankranso magistrate court has advised unit committees to render accounts of their stewardship to their communities.

He said accountability clears the minds of people from all suspicions and that the people have the legal right to request for accountability from the unit committees. Mr Owusu-Afriyie gave the advice when he bonded over Donkor, Issah and Tanee who were alleged to have insulted the chief of Akrofonso in the Ahafo-Ano North district during a clean-up exercise to be of good behaviour.

The three were alleged to have refused to attend communal labour and ordered the other people to stop working for the town's unit committee to render accounts of their three-year stewardship. They were said to have insulted the chief and Mr Kwame Sarfo, the chairman of the unit committee and called them thieves and liars. The court imposed a five million cedis fine on them and they will, in default serve two-year prison term.
