Court fines driver for conveying timber without permit

Mankranso (Ash), Jan. 26, GNA - The Mankranso magistrate court on Tuesday fined a 42-year-old driver, one million cedis for conveying timber without conveyance permit.

Peter Disenu who pleaded guilty to the charge, will serve a 12-month prison term in default.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Carl Michael Adjeng, told the court presided over by Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie, that on January 13, this year, Disenu loaded 165 illegally sawn "Akasaa" beams valued at 4.9 million cedis from Wioso to Mankranso in the Ahafo-Ano south district. He said when he arrived at Mankranso barrier, the timber task force there on inspection identified the beams and questioned the accused about the legality of the cargo he was carrying.

Chief Inspector Adjeng said Disenu's answer was not convincing enough and so he was arrested and handed over to the Mankranso police who after investigations charged him with the offence. 26 Jan. 05
