Court orders farmer to pay fine

The Nkawie circuit court has ordered Abdul Aziz, a farmer, to pay a fine of GH¢ 360 as punishment for inflicting cutlass wounds on a friend.

He had pleaded not guilty and would serve 30 months in prison should he fail to pay the fine.

Police Detective Inspector Emmanuel Appiah-Kubi told the court presided over by Mr Johnson Michael Abbey that the incident happened in April at Hiawu-Besease in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District.

The convict and the victim, Kofi Owusu, are friends and had gone to an Akpeteshie (local distilled gin) bar to drink.

They returned to the house of Aziz drunk and there he started accusing the victim of idle talk and gossip. He entered his room, brought out a cutlass and started slashing him.

Owusu was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he was kept on admission for a number of days.

A formal report was made to the police and Aziz was arrested.
