Court remands driver for car theft

A Kumasi Circuit Court has remanded a driver into prison custody for the alleged theft of an Opel Caravan taxi.

Kwaku Asubonteng pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on Wednesday, May 16.

Police Inspector Gulliver Tenkorang told the court presided over by Justice William Boampong that the complainant, Patricia Adu Gyamfi, had engaged the accused to drive her Opel Caravan cab.

The car developed a mechanical fault early in March this year, and was sent to a garage for repairs.

The prosecution said the accused went to the mechanic working on the car and claimed he had been instructed by the complainant to send it to another workshop because of the delay in fixing the fault.

Asubonteng succeeded in taking the cab away, sold it for GH¢800.00 and went into hiding.

The complainant later went to see the mechanic to check on the progress of work and was told the driver had removed it to another place.

The prosecution said on March 24, the accused was spotted and arrested.

He confessed selling the car and led the police to the buyer, who escaped on seeing the police.**
