Court remands man for raping a nursing mother

Sunyani (B/A), Oct. 9, GNA- A Sunyani Magistrate's court, presided over by Mr Joseph Robert Quanson, on Thursday remanded a 26-year-old farmer into prison custody for raping a 24-year-old nursing mother at Nkoranza in Brong-Ahafo.

Yaw Yelekayire's plea was not taken and he is to re-appear on October 22, 2003.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alex Yartey Tawiah told the court that Madam Elizabeth Adjei and the husband lived in the same vicinity with the accused at Nkoranza.

He said at about 1800 hours on January 10, 2003, the victim met the accused whilst returning home after visiting a public toilet. He said the accused asked the victim about her husband and was told he had travelled. Yaw then told Madam Adjei that he would join her in the house in the evening to have supper.

He said the accused did not visit the house as promised but he went there secretly in the night without the knowledge of the woman and sneaked into the victim's room whilst she was asleep with the baby. The prosecutor said the accused put off the light in the room and covered the woman's mouth with his hand and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.

He said the victim struggled with the accused to stop him from the act but she was over-powered.

ASP Tawiah said the victim reported the matter to her husband who also informed the elders of the town and later lodged a complaint with the police.

He said the accused admitted the offence upon interrogation.
