The Graphic reports on its front page that the assets of L'Air Liquide Ghana Limited in Kumasi are to be sold by public auction on September 30, on the orders of a Kumasi Circuit Court. The main lead story headlined: "L'Air Liquide assets for sale.. in Kumasi", says the order follows the refusal of L'Air Liquide to honour an order by the court asking the company to pay certain reliefs to an ex-employee who was wrongfully dismissed. The Graphic says the items to be sold include welding and office equipment and two pick-up vehicles. According to the paper, the offices and sales depots of the company were locked and sealed on September 18 in enforcement of the court order. GRI
"Market women demonstate", is the headline of a story in the centre spread of the Graphic which says hundreds of market women ejected from the Takoradi Market Circle on Tuesday, went on a peaceful demonstration in protest against lack of facilities at the new Apremdo Market where they are being resettled. The Graphic says the demonstrators who were led by the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Mrs Gladys Asmah, brought commercial activities around the Market Circle to a halt. According to the paper the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Task Force at dawn on September 16, took the traders by surprise, when it demolished all unauthorised structures around the market. GRI
In a back story the Graphic reports that the current fertility rate in the country which stands at 5.5 per cent is expected to drop to 5 per cent by the year 2000 and decline further to 1.5 per cent by the year 2020. Under the headline: " Fertility rate to drop by 2020", the story says to achieve this rate of fertility, there is the need to increase the prevalence of modern contraceptive usage to 15 per cent by the year 2010 and 50 per cent by 2020. The Graphic says this was disclosed by Daasebre (Dr) Oti Boateng, Government Statistician at the opening of a two-day national conference on "dissemination of results of the situation analysis study of family planning service in the country" in Accra yesterday.
