DCE In Show Of Power

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona East District in the Central Region, Martian Luther Obeng, has caused the arrest of a New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathizer in the area for allegedly calling him a monkey.

The DCE said the NPP boy, Kwesi Addo, rained insults on him and called him a monkey for unknown reasons, leading to his arrest on Monday at Agona Nsaba.

The agitated DCE told Oman FM in Accra yesterday that he had always been at the receiving end of the NPP sympathizer who, without any provocation, had been continuously insulting him.

He claimed that Addo and his colleagues in the NPP had been misbehaving because they did not have access to wee and alcohol as they used to, a claim he could not substantiate.

Mr Obeng stormed the Agona Nsaba Police Station area yesterday to rain insults on some NPP supporters who were organizing a press conference around the place. The angry DCE, clad in a ‘Fugu’ and accompanied by two machomen, rained insults on his opponents in the middle of the street.

The arrest of Addo caused tension in the town as NPP sympathizers trooped to the police station demanding the release of their colleague. Addo was yesterday granted a GH¢200 bail.

The DCE, who is always in the news for the wrong reasons, said he was ready to face anybody who would misbehave in the area since he was a native of the town.

“Don’t hide behind people and talk against me, those faceless people should come and face me on the street where there will be a real street fight, whoever dare will see where power lies,” he boasted.

The DCE, who was eager to face the people, stood behind the venue for the press conference for 30 minutes, apparently looking for trouble.

He however left when he realized that nobody was ready to fight him.

Addressing the press, the Agona East constituency chairman of NPP, Dennies Armah Frimpong, condemned the behavior of the DCE.

Mr. Frimpong stated that although NPP had been a law-abiding party and respected the rule of law, it could no longer contain the kind of harassment and intimidation being meted out to its members by the DCE.

He therefore appealed to President John Mills to call his boy to order to ensure total peace in the area.

“We the NPP members of Agona East cherish peace before, during and after the 2012 elections so the NDC government should call Obeng to order,” he warned.

Mr. Frimpong accused the DCE of misusing the assembly’s fund by fueling about four of his personal cars everyday and using them as a convoy.

He also accused the DCE of purchasing several items on credit from the Common Fund secretariat and deducting them from the assembly’s share of the common fund without prior approval by the assembly members.

The constituency chairman further bemoaned a situation where the DCE refused to sign an amount that needed to be paid to 80 needy students pursuing their education at secondary and tertiary institutions.
