At least ten excavators belonging to illegal miners have been burnt at the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region to serve as a deterrent to every illegal miner operating in the area.

Chairman of the District Security Council (DISEC), Hon. Yaw Danso led an anti-galamsey squad formed in the name of the local authorities to burn the excavators and other illegal mining equipment.

“Despite President Akufo-Addo’s directive through the Lands and Natural Resources Minister to halt illegal mining, these unscrupulous people are still mining illegally, hence our move against it”, the District Chief Executive explained

“We have had a lot of reports of people are defying the President’s directive and I want to tell them that we are not also going to sit down as an Assembly”, Hon. Yaw Danso indicated

“We will storm their sites one day and we will set all their mining equipment ablaze” he warned directing persons who are in the district for illegal mining activities to immediately leave or incur their wrath.

According to the DCE, activities of the illegal miners in the district have led to the recent increase in teenage pregnancies recorded in the region.

“These illegal miners are inducing the young girls with their monies to have unprotected sex with them. …the Assembly will soon roll out measures to ensure any school going teenager is prevented from early pregnancy”, the DCE stated.
