DISASTER REDUCTION MEASURES FOR ACCRA

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is organizing a series of activities to create the necessary awareness among the public on the effects of natural disasters and what can be done to mitigate them. So far, the Assemble has spent ?22million on its educational programme. The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr.. Nat Nunoo Amarteifio, made this known when he launched the Greater Accra Regional Disaster Management Day in Accra. The theme internationally is "Water too much, too little, the cause of natural disaster". Ghana has chosen the sub-theme; "Disaster Preparedness for a Safer World". The objective of the programme is to awaken the consciousness of the public on the effects of natural disasters especially the loss of life, property, destruction of the environment as well as socio-economic ventures. The Metropolitan Chief Executive said since technology has not found a total antedote to natural disasters, there is the need to educate the people and provide conditions that can minimise their effect. As a result of this, the AMA has trained some categories of people to mitigate the worst effects of disaster. End
