Sports journalist Saddick Adams has urged for decisive actions to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, to protect the country's water bodies.

He believes the government should criminalize activities that harm water sources, ensuring offenders are appropriately punished.

Adams, from Angel FM, also suggested declaring a state of emergency in areas heavily affected by illegal mining to address the issue effectively.

“Any activity that touches a source of water and causes harm to water, should be declared criminal. We demand that all mining in and around our water bodies be halted with immediate effect and a state of emergency in those areas be declared.

"We demand the repeal of 2022 (L.I. 2464) which has certainly accelerated the spate of Galamsey,” Adams wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Meanwhile, some frustrated Ghanaians have protested against illegal mining, facing strong opposition from police, which led to arrests.

Religious leaders, politicians, and other groups have also called for an end to galamsey, but the government has yet to respond.
