Abraham Amaliba, Director of Conflict Resolution at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Akufo-Addo to declare water bodies security zones.

The private legal practitioner, while speaking during a panel discussion on TV3’s New Day, stated that the military should be deployed to these areas with water bodies to prevent anyone from further destroying them.

“I think that immediately, let’s declare water bodies security zones. You see how when entering Burma Camp, you are stopped by the military and checked? That is the point we have gotten to with protecting the water bodies.

"So, water bodies should be declared security zones,” he demanded.

Amaliba further asked the President to call his appointees and Members of Parliament (MPs) who are involved in mining activities to order, referring him to Professor Frimpong Boateng’s report.

“Let the President call all his people engaged in galamsey activity; there are examples to show.

"If he is not aware of who they are, he should go and check the report of Professor Frimpong Boateng. Let them stay away. They have amassed enough. If they don’t mine for the next 85 days, they won’t go hungry,” he claimed.

He further advised the President to leave a good legacy behind before he leaves office, adding that the only way the President can leave a good legacy is to leave the water bodies clean before leaving office.
