The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association, Professor Dr. Ernest Yorke, is making a strong case for the National Health Insurance Authority to be decoupled from the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based JoyNews on July 17, he explained that the move would regulate and enhance accountability within the scheme.
"The NHIA must be decoupled from the NHIS so that they are not judge, jury, or prosecutor in their own court, as we have in the pensions space. There should be a regulator sitting at the top, emanating policies and programs. This would ensure that the national health scheme is more accountable," he stated.
He also called for commitment from political parties on the issue of capping connected funds for the National Health Insurance Scheme.
"The issue of capping the connected funds for the National Health Schemes and authority must be stopped, and we want genuine commitment from all political parties that the amount that is uncapped is released in a timely manner,” he noted.
There have been concerns that the National Health Insurance Fund must be exempted from the list of statutory funds that are capped, as the state of healthcare in the country requires adequate financing and should not suffer any reduction.
