Defilement: 4-year-old victim, mother relocated - MP

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South constituency in the Central Region, John Ntim Fordjour, has said that the four-year-old victim of an alleged defilement case and her mother have been relocated from Dadientem to prevent stigmatisation.

The victim, currently receiving treatment at the St Francis Xavier Hospital, is reportedly unable to walk as a result of the incident.

The perpetrator is on the run after the chief declared him innocent because the village deity said so, an allegation the chief has denied.

Rev Fordjour, who spoke to Class FM on Friday, October 27 said he has been offering his support to the victim and her family.

He told parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan, that the victim and her family have been moved from the community, while he makes efforts to seek psychological treatment for her.

“More importantly is the issue of the victim’s health. We have collaborated with the resident gynecologist for Assin Fosu St Francis Xavier Hospital; we have collaborated to find her a psychiatrist specialist in Cape Coast for referral to ensure she goes through further psychological therapy to ensure she recovers fully from the this trauma. Physically, she is doing well, but we will still follow up to ensure that she is given the best of treatment until she is fully healed. We have relocated them from the village to another town away from the community…and we are taking care of any cost from that as well,” he said.

He called for more awareness for the public to report issues to the appropriate authorities for redress in such cases for justice to be served.

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo is angry about the recent developments.

This was disclosed by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on Friday, October 27.

According to him, “yesterday, in Cabinet, the President was outraged and he indicated to the Minister for the Interior that whatever must be done should be done. Because there was no local complaint. The police had to come in to ensure that the proper thing is done. So I will indicate to you that something is being done”.

He made this known when a group known as Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA) petitioned Parliament to intervene in the defilement saga.

AWMA also indicated in their petition, their wish to have the case transferred to the Police Headquarters in Accra.

The four-year old, currently receiving treatment at the St Francis Xavier Hospital, is reportedly unable to walk as a result of the incident.

The perpetrator is on the run after the chief declared him innocent because the village deity said so, an allegation the chief has denied.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame further added that the issue should be treated devoid of political bias, emphasising, “it has nothing to do with any political party”.

For him, it was time institutions are equipped to be efficient to deliver their mandate.

“Our institutions must be equipped to do what is required of them and there will be sanity in our affairs,” he added.
