The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has praised the recent reforms in the Ghana Police Service under the current administration.

According to him, the high levels of professionalism exhibited by the police service during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration, where protesters provoked the service personnel, are commendable.

Dr. Bawumia, however, lamented how the police are often taken for granted in the country.

Dr. Bawumia made this known while addressing a gathering of police service personnel at the 53rd Cadet Officers' Graduation Parade at the National Police Training School at Tesano, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

“Let me commend the police administration for their high levels of police professionalism that we see lately and have taken for granted. It was not always like this. Gone are the days where the police were the butt of everyone's jokes for unprofessional conduct.

“I watched in amazement as the Ghana Police Service under extreme provocation from recent demonstrators maintained their discipline and professionalism,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the Vice President of Ghana, compared how peaceful protesters were met with brutal force by the police in the past to the current situation, noting that such actions are no longer being carried out by the police.

He added that the country now boasts a new police force whose professionalism he is proud of.

“It was not so long ago, we have long memories. Need I remind some Ghanaians that peaceful protesters were met with extreme brutalities with batons and whips. Today we have a new police service that we are all proud of…,” he added.

Dr Bawumia was the main guest at the passing out ceremony of police trainees.
