The Ghana Health Service has announced that 36 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in the Eastern and Central Regions of the country.

In a press statement issued on July 17, the GHS indicated that as part of its response measures, it has sent a team from the national level, comprised of entomologists and epidemiologists, to conduct a detailed outbreak investigation.

“As of today, we have confirmed 36 cases from both the Central and Eastern Regions. These cases were detected in communities by healthcare workers using appropriate case definitions. Notably, only one individual was admitted; the remaining cases are all in good health,” the statement added.

In 2019, the WHO recognized dengue as a significant threat among ten diseases, and recent outbreaks in various countries underscores this concern.

Dengue epidemics typically follow seasonal patterns, with transmission peaking during and after the rainy seasons.

Several factors contribute to the increase in dengue cases, including high mosquito populations, susceptibility to circulating serotypes, and favorable environmental conditions such as warm temperatures, precipitation, and humidity.

The situation is further complicated by a lack of proactive control measures and inadequate staffing for disease management.

The incidence of dengue has grown dramatically worldwide in recent decades, with an estimated 100 to 400 million infections occurring each year.
