The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), in partnership with the Gwakunda Engineering Services, a road constructing company, is reconstructing the Adenta-Frafraha-Dodowa road to ease the discomfort commuters go through on that stretch.

The road, which had been in a deplorable state for years, had generated public outcry with a call on the GHA to reconstruct it.

Mr Lawrence L. L. Lamptey, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the GHA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the road from Adenta-Barrier to Dodowa was constructed about 20 years ago as a two-way lane when the place was remote with few inhabitants.

He explained that about five to 10 years after construction, the area became urbanised and that due to the settlements along the road, rainwater could not flow into the bushes as expected, making it stagnant on the road.

Mr Lamptey said the area, which was a valley, worsened with time whenever it rained heavily, leaving the road in bad shape, hence the public outcry for its reconstruction.

He said the Gwakunda Engineering Services, was, however, awarded the contract two years ago but suspended work due to delay in payment.

“We were also not happy at the fact that that road was so bad, therefore, the contractor has now come back to site to work, creating drains at the edges so that they would, at least, help to get the water off the road,” he said.

The Authority had also spotted illegal hawkers and traders on the sides of the road and had to evacuate them to enable the contractors to execute the task effectively and with speed, he said.

Mr Lamptey said the contractor started work 10 days ago but found it challenging due to the continuous rains.

The Regional Director commended users of the road and residents for their patience and cooperation with the Authority adding that diversions would be created when the need arose to facilitate work.
