Describing Bawumia as ‘Mutum Banza’ caused NDC’s defeat - Obiri Boahen

Outspoken Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has observed that multiple factors worked against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the run-up to the 2016 elections which culminated into their disgraceful defeat.

He claimed the NDC had no message and all they could do was launched a scathing attack at the then Vice Presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to an extent Mr Koku Anyidoho described him as ‘Muntum Banza”.

Nana Obiri Boahen disclosed that whilst Ghanaians were hungry for a consoling message as to how any of the political party leaders intended addressing the teething challenges of the economy at the time, its Deputy General Secretary in charge of operations was busily heaping insults on the running mate of the NPP.

This he said was not what Ghanaians expected and therefore led to many being disappointed after failing to point out concrete measures they had adopted to turn around the economic fortunes of the country.

“You go and stand on a campaign platform and insult Bawumia; a man of that stature and expect Ghanaians to vote for you? You shout Bawumia Muntwum Banza Muntwum Banza, Bawumia Mumtwum Banza and you think Ghanaians want such people to govern them? Leaders are insulting, those at the grassroots are insulting so who do you think will vote for you”. He quizzed.

It would be recalled that at the NDC Ashanti Regional Launch at the Kumasi Jubilee Park in the run-up to the 2016 polls, the Deputy NDC scribe did not mince words in referring to the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as a ‘Mutum Banza’.

While addressing the teeming supporters of the party at the event, he was quoted as saying “when I say Dr Bawumia, say Mutum Banza. Dr Bawumiaaaaaaaaaaa” …and the crowd, including Vice President Amissah-Arthur, responded “Mutum Banzaaaaaaaa.”

Mr Koku Anyidoho has however maintained that he has no regrets describing then vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as “Mutum Banza”.

He defends the use of the adjective in describing Dr Bawumia stating that the latter in the past months has gained notoriety for lying and has, therefore, become useless to his own party and Ghanaians.

“Mutum Banza” is a Hausa expression used to describe a person who cannot be used for anything meaningful. In other words, “Mutum Banza” means “a useless person” or “a nonentity.”
