Francis Poku, a former National Security Minister under the John Agyekum Kufuor-led government, has issued a warning to Ghanaians about the serious consequences they may face if they continue to politicize military operations.

The former statesman expressed concern over the increasing politicization of military operations by certain individuals in the country.

He stressed that the troubling trend of criticizing every military operation whenever there is a change in government should not be encouraged.

During Ghana's Republic Day celebration on July 1, Poku delivered a lecture emphasizing the importance of providing non-partisan support to all security agencies.

With the upcoming December 7 general elections, Poku urged security agencies to conduct honest, regular assessments and review their operations and strategies to address any potential threats in the country.

"It should be an honest assessment. Let us evaluate and communicate because decisions made for election deployments should come from the Joint Intelligence Committee, determining the appropriate assignments. And please, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let us avoid politicizing operations," he stated.

Poku also recommended that security agencies and authorities establish a system of trust and communication to address uncertainties and create a solid security foundation for any operation.

"I suggest there must be communication. This is why they are deploying. There should be a firm security foundation for the operation, but the military must be accountable, starting with consultation with the commander-in-chief and the source of the operations. Are they from the Joint Intelligence Committee or elsewhere? Additionally, there must be respect for the rule of law, human rights, and accountability," Poku added.
