Retired senior police officer, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, has launched a scathing attack on Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, for taking on the task of directing traffic during President John Dramani Mahama’s investiture.

On January 7, 2025, to demonstrate his leadership, Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, exited his vehicle while en route to the inauguration ceremony at Black Star Square to assist with traffic management, despite having already deployed personnel for that task.

While Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare's actions have earned praise and admiration from certain segments of the public, critics, notably the Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG), have condemned the act, describing it as a ‘shameful display’ and a self-serving ‘public stunt’.

“This disgraceful episode is not only an attempt to court public favour but also a poorly disguised effort to launch a reappointment campaign for himself. Instead of focusing on the critical task of securing the nation and addressing the escalating crime rates under his watch, the IGP has sunk to the depths of political opportunism, using a national event to further his own self-serving agenda.

“The populist attempt through cheap, staged performances is nothing but a desperate and futile effort to conceal his complete failure. It is clear he has reached the end of his rope, with no fresh ideas or solutions to offer. The time has come for a change—a change in leadership that will bring in a new, experienced hand with a proven track record of restoring order, integrity, and public confidence in the service,” he added.,” FDAG said in its statement released on January 8, 2025.

Echoing the sentiments of the Forum for Development and Accountable Governance (FDAG) in response to its criticism of Dampare, ACP Benjamin Agordzo condemned the IGP accusing him of resorting to public theatrics as a tactic to gain favor and lobby for his position with the newly elected National Democratic Congress administration.

ACP Agordzo, a staunch critic of Dampare, argued that the act of directing traffic, as captured by cameras, was a deliberate attempt by the police leadership to conceal and deflect attention from the service's failure to address critical issues facing the country.

“Those who have eyes, can always see what Dampare is about. This kind of "eye service" aimed at catching the eyes of NDC leadership is shameful. The IGP is simply acting desperately to keep his office. Let's see how it goes,” he wrote in a Facebook post on January 8, 2025.
