Secretary for the Somanya Disability Association in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, Mr. Joseph Kwao has urged the physically-challenged to be self-reliant through educating themselves or learning a trade to make a decent living for themselves rather than seeking for alms on the streets.

He reminded them that disability is not inability while urging and encouraging them to obliterate the mentality that they cannot work on their own but rather depend on begging to survive.

Mr. Kwao is physically-challenged urged the physically-challenged in society to develop the ability to engage in several kinds of work to make life more comfortable them.

Speaking in an interview with host of Rite FM’s Morning Ride, Captain Adabuga on the morning show, the veteran teacher who is a government appointee to the Yilo Krobo Municipal assembly said he did not involve himself in begging despite his condition as a physically-challenged person.

His teaching profession coupled with his background as a tailor has given him an opportunity to earn a decent living for himself.

He despised the attitude of some physically-challenged in society which he finds “alarming and disgraceful” because of their rationale that they cannot work to make a living but rather depending on society for survival” and wondered if they are going to continue doing this for the rest of their lives.
