Disaster Volunteer Squads establish teak nurseries

Sekondi, May 20, GNA- Disaster Volunteer Squads in five communities in the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis have established teak nurseries in support of the afforestation programme.

Mr Alex Adu-Boahen, the Metropolitan Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi on Thursday. He said the squads are expected to nurse about 130,000 teak seedlings and these would be sold to Ministry of Lands and Forestry when they mature.

He said the Ministry would in turn supply the seedlings free of charge to registered farmers and interested people who wanted to establish forestry plantations or plant them on their farms and homes as wind breaks.

Mr Adu-Boahen said the nurseries project would provide income to the volunteer squads and make it easy to mobilise members of the squads in event of disasters.
