District Assembly donates books, computers to schools

Tolon (NR), Feb. 1, GNA - The Tolon/Kumbungu District Assembly on Thursday donated a total of 34,000 exercise books and six computers for distribution to various schools in the district to enhance learning. The Assembly provided 14,000 books from the HIPC fund and 20,000 books came from other sources for distribution to children in all the schools in the district.

The Tolon and Kumbungu Senior Secondary Schools also received a 29-inch colour Television sets each to enable them benefit from the President's Special Initiative on Distance Learning, while four other Junior Secondary Schools received a 21-inch colour television set each for the same purpose.

Presenting the materials, Mr Abubakari Alhassan Baako, the Tolon/Kumbungu District Chief Executive (DCE), said the presentation of the TV Sets to the four Junior Secondary Schools was in appreciation of their performance in the 2004 BECE exams, which shifted the district from 50th position to 12th position out of 110 districts.

He said provision of educational structures was the aim of the district and that in 2004 it spent 1.2 Billion cedis on educational facilities and indicated that the Assembly would not relent in its efforts to improve education.

Mr Baako said apart from provision of physical structures, the Assembly sponsored 98 teacher trainees in the various colleges to ensure that the schools in the district would not be short of teachers by the year 2010. He assured teachers in the district that the Assembly would build teachers' accommodation by the end of the year to accommodate teachers posted to the area.

Mr Yakubu Assani, Tolon/Kumbungu District Director of Education, who received the items on behalf of the schools expressed gratitude to the district and gave the assurance that teachers would put up their best to raise the standard of the education in the district.
