Do not politicise abolition of school fees-DCE

Agona Kwanyako (C/R), Oct 27, GNA - Mr John Kwesi Agyabeng, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona, has called on the people in the district not to politicise the abolition of school fees at the primary and junior secondary school levels.

He said the decision was not taken to score political marks or to solicit for votes in the December 2004 elections but to assist poor parents and guardians to send their children to school. This was contained in speech read on behalf for the DCE by Nana Kojo Frempong, Assemblyman for Kwanyako, to climax the Annual Akwambo Festival of the Chiefs and people of Agona Kwanyako, in the Central Region.

The Theme for the Week-Long Celebration was "rescuing the youth through education".

Mr Agyabeng said it was unfortunate that some people were reading politics into the measure by the District Assembly. The DCE expressed the hope that the decision would not be a nine-day wonder but would be continued to help raise the standard of education in the district.

Mr Agyabeng said the Assembly had built 72 classroom blocks and rehabilitated existing ones within the past four years to ensure quality of education.

He expressed concern about the falling standard of education in the district and pledged the determination of the assembly to improve it. The DCE said the assembly was sponsoring a number of people from the District in Teacher Training Colleges and tertiary institutions as part of its efforts to promote education.

He assured the chiefs and people of Kwanyako of the Assembly's preparedness to assist them to construct a modern library to help students and pupils to have quality education.

Mr Agyageng urged the people to ensure that political activities in the area were conducted in a peaceful manner in the a few days to the general election.

Nana Ampim Darko V, Chief of Kwanyako, commended the government for the extension electricity and rehabilitation and provision of transformers in the Kwanyako area. He appealed to the government to upgrade the Kwanyako Secondary School into a model school.

Nana Ampim-Darko called on the Ministry of Road and Transport to rehabilitate and upgrade the roads linking Kwanyako to Gomoa Buduatta and Akotsi. 27 Oct 04
