Domiabra (GAR), Feb 22, GNA - Mr J. O. Mills, Secretary of the Domiabra Area Council in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra Region, was on Wednesday elected Chairman of the Council at an election at Domiabra.
He polled 12 out of the 20 votes in a second round of voting after two of the three candidates, Mr Ishaq Ameku, a District Assembly Member and Mr Mills had polled eight votes each with Nana K Ofori also an Assemblyman getting four.
In the second round, Mr Mills obtained 12 votes while Mr Ameku had eight.
Addressing the Area Council members before the voting, Mr Ameku said with his 12 years experience as an Assembly Member, he would use his cordial relations with officials of the District Assembly at Amasaman to push for the development of the area.
Nana Ofori promised to continue from where their predecessors left of to ensure co-ordinated development.
He expressed his readiness to serve the people and not to "Lord it over the people", and said since funds for development depended on the amount collected from an area, he would make revenue mobilisation a top priority and ensure strict accountability.
Mr Mills called on the Area Council Members to look for a committed person to entrust the position to, adding that, he would ensure a development plan based on communities, which would form their committees to steer affairs.
Asked how he could mange the office of the secretary and the Chairman at the same time, Mr Mills stated that he would resign immediately either he won or lost the election.
After going through the Standing Order for Area C ouncils he was found to be legible to contest the election.
In the absence of officials of the Electoral Commission and the District Assembly members of the Council resolved to go ahead with the election and appointed three former Assembly Members present to act as joint Election officers.
The function was under the Chairmanship of Asafoaste Adjiri of Domiabra who commended the Council members for conducting themselves well. Mr Mills thanked the Council members for the confidence reposed in him and appealed for their support to ensure the accelerated development of the area.
