Security analyst, Adam Bonaa, has outlined ways the Ghana Police Service can restore public trust ahead of the elections.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb about how security should be handled during and after the elections, Bonaa stated that the leadership of the police must deploy qualified personnel to the appropriate locations for the December 7 elections.

According to him, personnel with no political affiliation should be deployed to restore the public's trust and confidence, cautioning against assigning individuals who have openly declared their political allegiances.

He referenced the leaked plot to oust IGP Dampare as an example of the risks posed by such affiliations.

“The police who are supposed to be in charge of electoral taskforce must make sure the right persons are deployed to the right locations. Once that is done, there will be confidence. But if you go deploy Supt. Asare and Gyebi to a certain location, people will come there well prepared to fight because of past incidents. If an ordinary officer, not involved in politics is deployed, no one will have issues,” he said.

Bonaa expressed concerns about how certain negative precedents have eroded public trust in the police service.

According to him, some security officers who have sworn to serve the country's interests have openly declared their affiliation to a political party and are working in the party's interest.

“Some of us were not happy about the leaked tape because some people were conspiring to remove the IGP so they can do mafia. If they are made the IGP, they can do mafia to break the 8. Eventually, Parliament set up a probe which led to findings of these people conspiring.

“Some of these people are still serving in the service; Supt. Asare and Gyebi are still in the service. COP Mensah is now gone after losing in the primaries so it tells you how some security officers have been heavily compromised. They are wearing uniforms by day and politicians by night and are scheming to undermine the electoral processes of this country,” he added.
