Weija (GAR), Oct 30, GNA - Vice President Aliu Mahama, addressing durbars in various communities in the Weija constituencies, advised Ghanaians to shun politicians who would incite tribal sentiments to win support.
"We have lived together as one people all this while and nobody should be allowed to divide us for any gain", he said. "The conflicts in neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire and Liberia should guide us to preserve the unity of our nation at this critical time." The Vice President visited Weija, Nii Okaiman, Anyaa, Mallam, Gbawe and Tuba in spite of a heavy downpour in some of the areas and advised the people to elect people who are competent, selfless and possess the ability to mobilize them to fight poverty.
He said the government would continue its programme to provide facilities in education, health, infrastructure, agriculture and other fields to improve their lots when the NPP's mandate is renewed in the December Polls.
The Weija Constituency, which is the largest in the country with over 150,000 registered voters, also has some of the most derived communities with many children out of school.
Vice President Mahama told the people to send their children to school because education is a catalyst to poverty reduction. He assured the people of Weija that their roads would be done as soon as Ghana Water Company completed laying its pipelines. Their request to have their lands returned to them by the government, which acquired them many years ago for development projects, he said, would be considered.
He introduced the NPP's Parliamentary Candidate, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to them and described her as a dynamic woman who would be a good parliamentarian.
