Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), July 14, GNA – More than 200 senior citizens in the Dormaa Municipality have called on parliament to consider a national debate on the need to enact laws that will compel the youth to respect the elderly in society.

They made the appeal at a party organised for them by the Municipal Assembly to mark this year’s Senior Citizens Day at Dormaa-Ahenkro.

Five senior citizens were presented with awards for their outstanding role in Dormaa over the past years.

Among them was Mr Abraham Lincoln Amoateng who served as the District Secretary for the then Dormaa District for six years during the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era.

They expressed concern over the spate of indiscipline in society.

The senior citizens observed that even though traditional, opinion, political and religious leaders had over the years preached the importance of discipline as pre-requisite for success in all human endeavours, their efforts were not making any influence on the youth.

They cited drug abuse, indecent dressing, lukewarm approach of the youth to duty and education as well as the negative attitude of the youth towards the elderly as some of the unacceptable ways the youth demonstrated their behaviour.

The senior citizens called on the need for some of those basic attitudes to be regulated by laws so as to protect society’s age-long traditions and norms.

Mr Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Municipal Chief Executive called for a unified and non-partisan approach to finding solutions to basic problems confronting the area.

He urged those in responsible positions in the municipality to show interest in developing projects in order to ensure that the project were executed in line with laid down specifications.
