Driver’s mate arraigned for robbery

A driver’s mate, Yaw Evans Ametepe, on Tuesday, appeared before an Accra circuit court for conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Yaw allegedly conspired with one Emmanuel, now at large, to rob one Stanford Ampah of Ghc70.00 at Ogbojo in the Greater Accra Region.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the offences and was remanded into prison custody to reappear on October 1.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Tuaruka Duuti, told the court that the complainant, Stanford Ampah, is a taxi driver and lives at Ashaley Botwe while the accused person is a driver’s mate and lives at Madina.

He said on September 1, at about 1930 hours, the accused person and his accomplice, Emmanuel, hired the services of the complainant from Ashaley Botwe to Ogbojo near Sand Fruit Factory.

DSP Duuti said on reaching the place, the accused person took the complainant to an obscure place, put off the taxi’s engine and pulled a knife and his accomplice also pulled a pistol on the complainant.

He said they ordered the complainant to surrender his money and mobile phone, to which he complied by giving them his daily sales of GHc70.00.

The prosecution said the accused persons, not satisfied with the money, started pressing for the complainant’s mobile phone and the taxi.

He said a good samaritan, who was watching the scene from an uncompleted building nearby, raised the alarm by shouting for help.

DSP Duuti said the accused persons took to their heels, but luck eluded Yaw who ran into someone’s house and was arrested.

He said the accused person admitted the offence during investigations and stated that he was lured into the act by his accomplice, who provided the knife for the action.
