Driver's mate jailed 20 years for abduction and defilement

Tema, Feb 27, GNA-A 24-year-old driver's mate who abducted a 14-year-old girl from Old Ningo to Ashaiman and had sex with her resulting in pregnancy, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Tema circuit court "B". Daniel Quaye pleaded guilty to two counts of abduction and defilement.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DS)) Anysiya Aganiba, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Mr Stephen Teye that in October 2004, the victim left home and never returned, therefore a report was made to the Old Ningo police, while her relations mounted a search for her. He said on December 10, 2004, the father of the victim saw her working at a chop bar at Ashaiman and quickly informed the Old Ningo police which led to the arrest of the bar owner. DSP Aganiba said during police investigations, it was revealed that Quaye, in October, visited his hometown, Old Ningo, lured the victim to Ashaiman and camped her in his room.

However, when Quaye realised that his source of income was low and could not therefore, adequately cater for the victim, he solicited the assistance of the chop barkeeper, who employed her. DSP Aganiba said during the period that the victim stayed with accused, he frequently had sexual intercourse with her that resulted in pregnancy. He said the accused was traced and arrested from his hideout and in his cautioned statement admitted the offences, including the acceptance of the pregnancy, while he contended that the victim was his girlfriend.
