Drivers appealed to government to review transport fares

Nkawkaw, Feb.22, GNA- Commercial drivers operating in the Kwahu East and South districts have appealed to the government to review the 30 per cent transport fares imposed as a result of the 50 per cent increase in fuel prices last week.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, a number of drivers said the approved fares were not in their favour since they are paying more for lorry tyres, insurance and income tax.

Mr Emmanuel Kofi Boateng, Secretary of the Nkawkaw-Accra Number One Mini-bus branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) said, before the new fuel prices were announced many spare parts dealers had arbitrarily increase the prices of their goods.

Mr Emmanuel Agyekum, Chairman of the Nkawkaw-Mpraeso Main Station GPRTU Taxi Branch, said drivers were operating at a loss since they make only 28,000 thousand cedis from a gallon of petrol which is selling at 30,000 cedis.

The Secretary of the Nkawkaw-Beposo Mini bus Branch of GPRTU, Nana Yaw Boadi called for an upward adjustment of the transport fares to keep drivers in business.
