Drivers asked to save the nation from losses through road accidents

Koforidua, Sept 07, GNA - The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Road Safety Committee, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vincent Dzakpata, has appealed to commercial drivers to save the country and families from the huge human and financial losses resulting from casualties in road accidents.

He said road accidents had become a national menace since they tended to put all persons at risk, irrespective of social, economic, academic or political status.

Mr Dzakpata, who is also the Eastern Regional Police Commander, was opening a three-day upgrading training course for some drivers organized by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with the Ghana Road transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC).

The 40 participants were drawn from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Ghana Co-operative Transport Union and Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA).

Mr Dzakpata called on stakeholders to ensure safety on the roads and assured that the committee would continue to organize seminars and quiz competitions for drivers and school children, while the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) would step up its road checks.
