UK police grab three more Ghanaians
Security agencies in the UK have arrested three Ghanaians in connection with the alleged drug case involving the Member of Parliament for Nkoranza, Mr. Eric Amoateng Currently, the US attorney is requesting the extraditions of the two whose names have been withheld to the US for prosecution.
Nana Darko Busia, a Ghanaian lawyer based in London, told this reporter in an interview that Honourable Amoateng was charged with a two count indictment of unlawful drug importation to the US and conspiracy to distribute illegal drugs in the US.
He explained that the Federal Attorney did not grant the MP the option of drug control redelivery which when found guilty would reduce his mandatory prison sentence of 15 years to five.
'With his situation now, he may go to jail for 15years but I believe after serving two-thirds of the sentence he would be released and deported to Ghana.' Nana Darko, who also has a law firm in New York USA, said he had a collect phone call from Mr. Amoateng from where has been placed in and the MP indicated that the police had gone to search the address. Other North American contacts hinted The Chronicle that Amoateng initially stayed at a hotel in the Manhattan area and was found in the company of an Egyptian. They added that Amoateng also nursed presidential ambitions. According to Nana Darko, who described himself as the grand son of the late Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. K.A. Busia, the Public Defender representing the MP Mr. Jimmy Taylor was to brief him later in the day to get more insights into the matter. He said he has arranged with a Ghanaian solicitor in the US, Mr. Michael Kwaku Agyekum, to visit Mr. Amoateng in custody and take the case up from there and represent the MP at court. He said indications are that the case will be sent to the grand jury after investigations have been completed. Nana Darko who said he has known the MP for decades as a friend described him as humble and hard working. He was however quick to say 'he associated himself with some Russians here in London which was so suspicious. I talked about it briefly with him but I don't know?' He believed it might be a frame up 'If not then it is disturbing and embarrassment to all of us' He noted. Nana Darko hinted that Mr. Amoateng visited the UK quite frequently and even has an address. He said the security agencies have searched his address in London upon instructions from the American security agencies and some letters found in his name have been picked up and dispatched to the US.
