The family of the late Mr Joseph Yaw Avornor a final year Engineering student of Accra Polytechnic who was shot at Dansoman ?Akokorphoto? in Accra in June 2001 by a police officer has threatened to take the Inspector General of Police IGP as well as the government to court to retrieve compensation due them.
The family expressed regrets that whilst they are still mourning their child in pain the culprit, one corporal Twumasi Appiah has been left off the hook walking around freely. Led by a brother of the deceased?s family disclosed that after coercing them to allow the burial of their son the Ghana Police service abandoned them and failed to give them the compensation the police promised.
The brother noted that since the death of his brother they received only 2 million cedis from the Police to cover morgue, autopsy and coffin expenses. He said during the funeral, Mr Jake Obetsebi Lamptey then Chief of Staff and minister for Presidential Affairs noted two crates of drinks and the IGP gave two cartons Beer for the performance of the funeral rites. It will be recalled that A police officer by name Corporal Twumasi Appiah of Dansoman police station who was alleged to be drunk shot dead Mr Joseph Avornor who was returning from an all night service. The police was detained reports said.
According to the family since the burial of their child their attempt to hold the police service to their words proved futile and they rather wasted money on transportation to follow-up the compensation. They said they have been told the police officer is walking about freely. When contacted the CID on the case, Inspector Amoako, confirmed that the police officer Twumasi Appiah has been granted bail, but he is currently on interdiction.
